Build a Roman Theater
19.6-16.8
What You Can Expect
If you’re interested in staying in Sentire longer and want to experience living in a community, this program is for you. This two-month seminar invites you to create and engage with theater in its fullest sense—building a physical theater while exploring the transformative power of theatrical tools and acting.
Together, we will construct a Roman-style theater near a spring-fed lake, blending classical guidelines with modern understandings of theater design. In ancient Greece and the Roman Empire, the theater was one of the first structures built in a new city, reflecting its central role in culture and community life. We continue this tradition, treating the construction of our theater as a meaningful and foundational step in building our community. The theater will be open to the sky, with the natural landscape as its backdrop, serving as a space for gathering, creativity, and exploring emerging themes. Using natural materials such as mud, stones, and wood, participants will engage in hands-on work, emphasizing connection with the body and being aware of oneself and one’s surroundings during work.
Simultaneously, daily theater sessions will explore themes of identity, presence, and group dynamics, offering a fun and intimate way to connect. By consciously adopting different characters, participants will gain insights into their roles in life, helping to reveal new dimensions of self-awareness and freedom. The theater work will focus on the joy of creation, laughter, and group intimacy, making space for deep reflection alongside playfulness.
The seminar will culminate in a special performance in the newly built theater, blending ancient theatrical traditions with the lively spirit of Italian Commedia dell’Arte. This final event will weave together the physical and creative journeys of the seminar, celebrating the collective effort and stories brought to life.
The seminar will be led by experienced facilitators who specialize in natural building techniques and have many years of theater and movement work expertise. Their guidance will ensure a rich and supportive environment, balancing this transformative process’s technical and creative aspects.
